Register Here: The State of Dyslexia in Louisiana: Legislative Updates, Implications to Best Practices in Intervention and Assessment, and an Introduction to the Tests of Dyslexia (TOD) Act 266 of the 2023 Regular Legislative Session requires mandatory screening of all Kindergarten students for dyslexia in the Spring semester, beginning in 2024. While on the surface this may seem to be a matter of minor inconvenience at most, it is important to note that preexisting DIBELS benchmark assessments may not be utilized and the intended scope of the original bill was significantly broader, with the sponsor's voiced intent at committee hearings clarifying that they plan to enact more intensive legislation in upcoming years. Further, the dyslexia screener being pushed at this time is a 10-item teacher checklist in lieu of direct assessment of students' reading abilities and the ultimate requirements for how to use this data will undoubtedly be a hot topic in 2024.
